Ceramics

It is the goal of the ceramics program to provide students with specific instruction in all phases of ceramic art. In keeping with its aim to help the student integrate technical facility with independent and creative thought, the department provides a varied program responsive to the range of student needs. All students are encouraged to work with both ceramic sculpture and pottery in the introductory courses and to develop personal directions in their work as they advance through the curriculum. In all courses, regardless of level, emphasis is placed on the simultaneous development of aesthetic and technical skills. The Ceramics Department maintains an extensive program of extracurricular educational opportunities, including field trips, exhibitions, and workshops designed to expose students to various modes of thought, working methods, and works of ceramic art by leading professionals in the field.

The Ceramics Department is housed in the Ceramics Building. Electric wheels, slab roller, clay extruder, clay and glaze laboratories, semiprivate space for senior students, and 10 kilns (wood, raku, soda, salt, electric, and gas) may be found in these facilities. The Sculpture Fabrication Workshop, situated between the Ceramics and Sculpture Buildings, enables ceramics students to access sculpture tools and woodworking equipment.
