Dean's Message

We believe that every student arrives with unique gifts and abilities. We believe artists and designers reveal and transform their times and our job is to help make transparent a challenging, dynamic, creative process that will assist each in the development of his or her unique voice.

I appreciate your interest in the Hartford Art School. Since our founding, in 1877 our mission has been steadfast: “To develop successful practicing artists and designers.” The Hartford Art School embraces both continuity and change: we are committed to exploring the innovative possibilities of digital technology and in the engaged, hands-on, intimate nature of all art making.

As we move into the 21st Century and address the creative prospects of digital technology, our new Renee Samuels Center provides state-of-the art digital equipment and studios specifically designed for Media Arts and Photography. We have also renovated painting, drawing, printmaking, and foundation studios to improve our ability to teach more traditional disciplines that continue to flourish in our time.

Our distinguished faculty of artists and designers believe in one-on one mentoring across all disciplines; they set high standards for aesthetic development and intellectual growth. We offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in nine majors and two Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees. In addition, our many visiting artists programs bring outstanding artists to lecture, present workshops and exhibit, each year.

The Art School’s Joseloff Gallery exhibits the work of highly regarded contemporary artists, the Donald and Linda Silpe Gallery provides our students with the opportunity to prepare exhibits, and the Philip Alan Gallery in New York City provides our students and alumni with a place to show work before a New York audience.

Hartford Art School students benefit greatly from being part of a thriving, comprehensive university with access to courses, lectures, and expertise in a wide-range of academic fields. With over 200 arts related institutions within a 50-mile radius, and proximity to New York City and Boston, Hartford Art School students are surrounded by a diverse and thriving art world. Given our pluralistic era and global culture, our students have opportunities to study abroad. Each year, approximately 50 Hartford Art School students participate in international study.

We believe that every student arrives with unique gifts and abilities. We believe artists and designers reveal and transform their times and our job is to help make transparent a challenging, dynamic, creative process that will assist each in the development of his or her unique voice.

Again, thank you for your interest. We hope you are able to visit the Hartford Art School.
