Doug Andersen»Assistant Professor

  • Degrees: B.F.A. Painting- San Jose State University

After graduating from San Jose State University with a major in fine arts painting, I spent a few years in the gallery market. Finding the gallery market too commercial, I moved into the illustration market. I worked for five years in Lockheed’s Space Systems Division as an illustrator. There I was doing technical illustration and conceptual paintings of spacecraft and hardware. Some of the programs I worked on were Space Shuttle, Space Telescope, Space Station, and early Mars landing projects. I spent another five years as an art director for Lockheed’s New Business Acquisition, doing conceptual renderings for new products, and designing presentation artwork for SSD’s Acquisition Management. On leaving the space industry I have spent the last 20 years free-lancing in the Science Fiction game and book cover market along with other various markets. I have also been teaching for the last 20 years at the Hartford Art School. The classes I teach are: Drawing for Illustration, Figure Illustration, Figure Painting, Digital Illustration, Watercolor Techniques, Acrylic Techniques, Oil Techniques, Editorial Illustration, Advertising Illustration, Archaeological Illustration and Portfolio Preparation. Clients include: Aviation Week, Baen Books, Beagle Bay Books, Checkerbee Publishing, Doubleday Books, DreamWeaver Studios, FanPro Games, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine, Fantasy Realms Magazine, Fasa Corporation, GDW Games, Palmtree Publishing, Penguin Books, Popular Science, R. Talsorian Games, Science Fiction Age Magazine, Scholastic Books, Scientific American, Time/Warner Games Division, Warner Books and Weaver Enterprises.
