Artists everywhere are connected!

09.04.09

Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing, Carol Padberg, visited Ghana, West Africa in June on a University of Hartford Summer Stipend Award for faculty research.  While in Ghana, Carol conducted artist studio visits, met with the directors of arts institutions, and visited Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.  She also attended the exhibition of the 3rd SaNsA International Artists’ Residency (see photos).

“I went to Ghana to meet artists and learn about contemporary art in West Africa.  The art scene in Ghana is extremely vibrant, with many dynamic new institutions anchoring an active art community.  Visiting the Nubuke Foundation, the Artist’s Alliance, and the Foundation for Contemporary Art gave me a glimpse of how artists are creating their own artist-based organizations in Accra.  Getting to know Ghanaian artists was a powerful experience for me.  It confirmed my belief that artists everywhere are connected through the shared visual language of human creativity.  After being warmly welcomed by artists in Ghana, I look forward to hosting members of the Ghanaian art community here, at the Hartford Art School.”

Examples of Carol’s recent works, which were inspired by her trip, are in the current Hartford Art School Faculty Exhibition.
