MFA in Illustration

Successful graduates of the low-residency Master of Fine Arts in Illustration program at the Hartford Art School are
prepared to:

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary illustration and the range of career opportunities within the field

• Understand and evaluate the history of illustration and its application to current artistic practice

• Demonstrate an understanding of the business aspects of the illustration field and develop a written personal marketing strategy with specific objectives and completion timeline

• Demonstrate problem solving skills, mastery of traditional and digital illustration techniques, and an understanding of the impact of changing technologies on the illustration field

• Demonstrate competency in writing and research, culminating in a written thesis that documents their influences, creative strategies, project goals and self-assessment, and showcases their thesis exhibition work

MFA in Photography

Successful graduates of the low-residency Master of Fine Arts in Photography program at the Hartford Art School are prepared to:

• Demonstrate a high degree of competency in the various modes and methods of photographic image production in analog and digital photography

• Demonstrate, through verbal and written critique, knowledge of a selection of photographic works within their cultural context

• Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between personal explorations and the influence of contemporary and historical artistic practice, and how these interface with their personal aesthetics

• Demonstrate understanding of contemporary professional practices as they apply to the art market, publishing, and commercial fields of photography
